ABOUT.

I am a figurative artist in the modernist tradition, focusing on a poetic and lyrical interpretation of the genre. My source of inspiration in terms of subject matter tends to be current affairs. However, I root my interpretation of the subjects in my subconscious, so that the work can exist in a curious liminal space.

To this end, I seek to find the point at which the painting can show an intention and yet still retain the mysterious energy which comes from delving into the subconscious. Multi-layered memories play a key role in allowing me to interpret a subject that I may have observed, pondered or experienced over many years.

I strive to develop and intuit a deeper understanding of creativity and the bounded world. It’s a kind of curiosity to know what else the brain can do and how it can be useful. As my works veer towards the abstract, I would say that I like to provoke an emotional as well as intellectual response from the viewer.

I am drawn to Eastern as well as Western traditions of art, as together they allow me a more flexible approach to modernism. The imperative of time and performance play an important role, so I have developed techniques to allow me to accommodate this. They inevitably affect the tone and texture of my work.

Despite centuries of artists working on a two dimensional canvas, I believe there are ways in which we can extend artist expression on a flat surface further.

BIO.

In my upcoming show show, I am graduating from the Post-Diploma Figurative Art course at the Heatherley School of Fine Art. It was designed by Glaswegian artist Fred Crayk.

Previously, I graduated from the Royal Drawing School’s one year Online Drawing course. Since 2007, I have completed the Heatherley’s two-year Portrait Diploma and various other courses in watercolour, drawing, sculpture and printing.

Prior to my focus on art, I worked for 15 years in journalism and emergency relief. I have an MA from Edinburgh University, after completing secondary education in the UK. I was raised in the Far East.

Other sources of inspiration for me include music, poetry and dance.
